EU Freezes U.S. Trade Deal Over Greenland Tariff Threat

Approval halted after Trump warns of new tariffs on Europe.

What the Deal Included

The agreement would have capped U.S. tariffs on most EU products at 15%, among the lowest rates granted to any trading partner.

What the Deal Included

Some goods, such as generic pharmaceuticals, would have faced zero tariffs.

Trump’s Tariff Warning

Trump warned he would impose tariffs on seven EU countries and the UK unless the U.S. gains control of Greenland.

“No steps will move forward until cooperation replaces confrontation.”

Trade committee chair Bernd Lange said continued threats against Greenland, Denmark, and European allies left no alternative but to suspend progress.

Sovereignty Concerns

Lange said Europe’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are at stake, adding that “business as usual” is no longer possible under current conditions.

Benefits for Both Sides

In exchange, the EU planned to lower tariffs on select U.S. goods, supporting American agriculture and industrial exports into the 27-nation bloc.
